Slip-ons
The loafer, from penny to tassel
Penny, tassel, and Belgian loafers, and when a slip-on still counts as a dress shoe.
Why a slip-on still counts
A loafer has no laces. That alone does not make it informal. Dark calf, a leather sole, and a close throat can sit with odd trousers and, in many cities, with a suit. Soft suede, a thick rubber sole, and a wide open throat push the same silhouette toward the weekend.
This essay stays with three classical shapes: the penny, the tassel, and the Belgian bow. They share a slip-on construction and diverge in how dressy they look. Learn the throat and the decoration before you buy a second colour.
The penny
The penny loafer has a strap across the vamp with a slot cut out of it. It came into menswear as a weekend shoe, and it is still the most useful slip-on. In dark calf it works with odd trousers, flannel, and a knit. In suede it is a warm-weather shoe, and it should stay away from a city suit.
Santoni cuts the penny beside a sleeker oxford. Velasca makes the softer everyday version.
Fit is settled by the throat and the heel, not by the slot. A loose heel will slip; a tight throat will burn. If you wear a thick sock in winter, try the same last with that sock before you buy a second colour.
The strap should lie flat. A strap that stands up or gaps at the sides usually means the last is wrong for your instep. Do not stretch a loafer the way you might stretch a laced shoe; without laces there is less you can adjust once the leather is set.
The tassel
A tassel loafer puts two leather tassels where the penny strap would be. In black or dark brown calf, with a leather sole, it is slightly dressier than a penny. It can sit with a suit more easily, above all where a slip-on with a suit is already ordinary.
Crockett & Jones makes the tassel on a rounded English last, which keeps it from looking like a driving shoe. Carmina makes it on both a Spanish last and an English-influenced one, so the same style can be narrow or a little fuller.
Keep the tassels modest. Large or brightly dyed tassels pull the shoe toward leisure. Dark calf and a short tassel keep the shape nearer a dress shoe.
Tassels move when you walk. That motion is part of the style. If you dislike it, choose the penny or the bow instead of buying a tassel and hoping the leather will settle into stillness.
The bow
A Belgian loafer is known by a small bow on the vamp, and by a throat cut more like a slipper than a shoe. The original is a house slipper with almost no sole. Makers in this index usually give the bow a proper sole and a heel, so it can be worn in the street.
Treat it as the dressiest of the three: black calf, a thin sole, and a careful bow. It is not a weekend penny. Paolo Scafora is the Neapolitan end of this close, light shoe.
The bow should sit flat. A tall ribbon reads as costume. A thin leather bow in the same colour as the upper is the quiet version that belongs with a suit.
Because the throat is open, the Belgian is less forgiving of a high instep than a laced oxford. Try it later in the day, when the foot is slightly larger, and walk on a hard floor. Soft carpet hides a slip that will annoy you on marble.
Cloth and season
Unlined loafers are for heat. They breathe, they soften, and they are wrong with heavy flannel. A lined loafer with a leather sole is the one that can go near a jacket.
A rubber or crepe sole sends the same shape outdoors and off the city pavement. Use it for travel and for wet streets. Keep a leather sole for the office and for evenings when the shoe is meant to read as dress.
Socks change the formality as much as the shoe. A dark over-the-calf sock with a black tassel keeps the line of a suit. A bare ankle with suede pennies is a summer manner. Mixing those signals—bare ankle under a charcoal suit, or heavy wool socks with unlined summer loafers—usually looks unfinished.
A horsebit, with a metal snaffle across the vamp, is a different object. The metal is the decoration, and this index does not follow that style. Stay with the penny, the tassel, or the bow, then look through the shoe edit once you know which throat you want.
